DSpace equivalent Hydra Head

Many DSpace users (80%? 90%?) are pretty static.  The ambitious iothers are looking to cover more use cases than previously.  DSpace is difficult to grow: monolithic and based on an outdated IR model.

Needs to be a core with additional functionality and wider integration.  Some DSpace people have looked at Hydra as a platform to do this.  DSpace over Hydra isn't feasible (sensible); it requires a new stack.  Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, Indiana seem to be interested in this (also Illinois, Edinburgh, Cambridge, Oregon State?), wanting to migrate away from DSpace: any work should include potential adopters.

Hosted, re-architected DSpace might be a way forward for the 80-90%.  There is an actice group looking at use cases and re-architecting.

If "we" produce something for the 10%, how do we make it attractive to the 90% when they realise they need it 3-13 years out?

Migrations could be difficult because of local modifications and customisations.

Would the planned IR vertical be acceptable internationally?  For instance, what will it do about CRIS integration which is important in Europe and Australia but less so (yet) in the US?
