ORCID and Hydra
ORCID
• Rick Johnson, in charge of digital repository team/tools
⁃ Notre Dame received grant to integrate ORCID with Hydra
• Bill Ying, ARTStor
⁃ SharedShelf and interested in ORCID for SharedShelf professors
⁃ Could it all be implemented together
• Patricia Hswe, Penn State
⁃ Want to integrate ORCID in HydraHead
• Karen Estlund, University of Oregon
⁃ Interested in hearing how it is being used / will be in Hydra
• Tom Johnson, Oregon State University
⁃ Keep track of pulse
• James Van Mil, University of Cincinnati Libraries
⁃ Campus Interested in potential
• Christine Rissmeyer, UCSB
⁃ How could ORCID be integrated into the
• Stacy Konkiel, Data Mgt, Indiana University
⁃ Inter-institutional collaboration and shared infrastructure issues
• Jeremy Friesen, Notre Dame
⁃ Working on Notre Dame grant, https://github.com/ndlib/hydra-orcid_profile/wiki
⁃ Wants to hear about user stories and possible future directions
• Christen Hedegaard, Royal Library, Denmark
⁃ Want to integrate ORCID with IR
• Christian Ertmann-Christiansen, Royal Library, Denmark
⁃ Partner with ORCID/Hydra integration
⁃ ORCID is the main identifier that is being used and want to adopt in Hydra
What is Notre Dame doing for the grant?
• Not assuming things everyone is doing it the same way
• How to retrieve from ORCIDs and how to share back to ORCID
• Proxy assumed for creating ORCIDS for other people (Office of Research creates ORCIDS for people have gotten grants.)
• Use Cases
⁃ Create and retrieve ORCID IDS in Curate ND
⁃ Retreive an existing ORCID
⁃ Large Scale creation/assignment of ORCID IDs
⁃ Account linking/federating with ORCID as ID account
⁃ authenticate via ORCID ID instead of campus ID (useful for people who leave)
⁃ Don’t want anyone who creates an ORCID to sign up for IR
• First step is authenticating with CAS (campus) ID system
• Metadata in ORCID is fairly simple
⁃ Easy to push metadata
⁃ Records coming in aren’t robust but start allowing for connections
• Two major milestones:
⁃ Create prototype
⁃ Funding a week long developers meeting to jumpstart local concerns / institution specific (Chicago, early-mid March)
• Larger ORCID developer meeting May 21 in Chicago
Discussion
• Vivo? Chris (Royal Library of Denmark) interested in Vivo and Notre Dame more IR. Several partners have Vivo but will still keep them separate.
• Other integrated like SHARE proposal in US to share public data
• Some institutions have political issues with assigning ORCIDs to faculty
• Disambiguation and duplicate record issues with ORCID
• There isn’t a unique identifier for the document in the ORCID record
• Hopefully, metadata should be managed in SharedIR not ORCID
• Single entry for about metadata would be nice for researchers
User Stories, https://github.com/ndlib/hydra-orcid_profile/wiki
• User authenticates, get provisional account in Hydra, authenticate in ORCID, then no longer provisional
• Creating an ORCID, requires membership for a certain level of the API, does similar to above but in batch
⁃ When we say batch create 50 people, does the name already exist, then disambiguate to the best of ability
• Importing ORCID works, to bring from ORCID into repository, identify with a type map and take attributes and maps to corresponding bucket in Fedora, when import look at DOIs and skip over to not add
⁃ Hydra Remote identifier gem, creates mapping for requesting a remote identifier
⁃ What is the shared identifier to pass back and forth?
Discussion Cont.
• How to handle problem of disambiguation for existing ORCID IDs?
• What happens when person moves to another institution and how does ORCID know?
• Vivo problem to solve problems with Same-As
• ORCID should do pattern control?
• ORCID ID’s should be transferrable to institutions
• Universities are just stewards not owners
• Once have ORCID can have Gmail or other links, too
• Soft deletes, so things can be resurrected
• Cincinnati wants to take info from researcher directory to Hydra. How does ORCID fit in? is it a conduit?
• The more places you put it the better
Action Items
• Stacy Konkiel give user storie(s) to Jeremy Friesen
• Rick Johnson will let people know how to be involve in March Chicago event or give feedback
• Rick Johnson will make overview grant document available more widely here Hydra ORCID Plug-in Grant Proposal
