Agenda/Notes

  • Avalon user survey

  • Avalon 7.7 development updates

    • demo new media object page

    • What type of file can be a transcript?

    • Can a playlist be added to display of items in a collection? Would like to preserve a playlist and make it available as part of the collection.

    • Is there a way to see / manage all playlists in the system? Can tell by playlist ID that playlists are being created. If person who created playlist doesn’t share with other, no way to find about it (even if it is public).

  • Survey results so far

    • 9 institutions responded so far

    • Most highly ranked roadmap items (3-4 institutions voted critical)

      • Administrative [Upgrade to Fedora 6]

      • Administrative [Add admin dashboard to allow application configuration in the user interface]

      • Metadata [Tools to update metadata in bulk]

      • User experience [Transcript searching]

    • Next up (2 institutions voted critical)

      • Administrative [User-accessible usage statistics]

      • User experience [Improve speed and responsiveness of user interface]

    • Comments

      • 2 institutions mentioned wanting to move away from the Fedora stack

      • 2 institutions (not including IU) mentioned accessibility as an institutional priority

  • Fedora 6 testing

    • Interest in Fedora 6 upgrade / Postgres alternative?

      • Virginia: Fedora 6 does improve transparency of storage, but is not an institutional commitment to stay on Fedora. Relational database and disk storage is probably an adequate replacement for Fedora. Not developing in Samvera anymore, which is why interested in relational database and using standard tools like db dumps. They use AWS primarily and do use Postgres; only using Fedora for Avalon and another legacy project. Even just moving to Fedora 6 might help move toward a migration off Fedora in the future (due to OCFL).

      • UMD interested in bringing all applications to Fedora 6

    • If not Fedora, what else?

  • Updates from other institutions

    • UMD: currently fine-tuning OAI-PMH

    • Virginia: looking at potentially purchasing a DAMS, but probably won’t provide enough features as Avalon. Currently running the cloud using Terraform + Ansible. Use the standard deployment and then overlay their changes. Would be willing to share what they’ve done when the person responsible is back in the office.

  • Future agenda items?

    • Summary of survey responses

    • UMD OAI-PMH demo - tentatively schedule for next meeting, 12/11/23

      • Harvested content will be available through Digital Library of Georgia; eventually DPLA. Labor and Civil Rights in the American South. UMD has AFL-CIO records.
