Agenda/Notes
Avalon 7.7 development updates
7.7 will replace mediaelement.js for media player with Ramp IIIF player
Demo of added Series metadata field
useful for TV broadcasts; groupings of media objects within a collection
New Series facet on search / browse page
Series field on Resource Description page. Typeahead will populate with series already in the index for this unit or can enter new values.
Items across multiple collections could be in the same series. Not restricted to a subset of a collection infrastructure.
Is it possible to retroactively assign items to a series? Ex: concert series that happens over time. Yes, this metadata field will be available in all records.
Is there any way to update Series field through batch ingest? You can bulk update access control, but not bulk update of metadata via a spreadsheet. Can update records in bulk using API.
Add to Playlist Functionality UI Changes
anyone actively using playlists? Not on this call today.
Currently, have “add to playlist” buttons in at least 3 places on the media object page. Plan to combine those all to a single button underneath the media player.
Removed Uppy library for improving file uploading from 7.7 release (ran out of time!)
Hope to have 7.7 available in November.
Avalon updates from other institutions
Joshua (UMD): Want to get to current 7.6 release. Currently on 7.4. Will be working on that in the next couple of months when developers are available. Then will look at 7.7.
Developed an OAI-PMH endpoint for their Avalon implementation. Primarily talking to Solr index. Allows them to expose materials for harvesting. Grant requirement for their material to be harvestable by Digital Library of Georgia.
OAI-PMH has the concept of a set - the material you want to expose to OAI. Need to be able to tag content to expose through OAI-PMH. Currently using metadata in a notes field that can be searched. But could use series for this. Another alternative would be to have an ID for OAI set.
UCSD: still having issues with SSO. Don’t want to have to update source code to get SSO working because concerned about difficulty of running updates if have local alterations. They use either Shibboleth or Google Auth and have tried to stick both in with OmniAuth. Would like it to work more like the LTI solution where can be configured with .yaml.
Are there things we can do in Avalon to make this work better for other institutions?
