Agenda/Notes

  • Avalon 8.0 update

    • 8.0 release is now tagged in Github

    • Still working on upgrade instructions

      • Fedora 6 migration worked smoothly in IU test site and with dataset up to several thousand items

      • Having issues with Fedora 6 migration with our much larger production dataset (~300,000)

      • IU may have to delay go-live until late February

    • UMD: are there any concerns about repository bloat? Too many OCFL objects for what we consider 1 digital object?

      • OCFL objects are 1:1 with Fedora IDs. There are multiple OCFL records that made up a media object. There are separate objects not contained under media objects (section lists, access control) 

      • This is all about the specific model used by the application, so this is specific to the application and the application’s model (not Fedora).

      • In the future, we may want to collapse objects (ex: access control) to simplify our data modeling in Fedora

  • avalon-l@list.indiana.edu and avalon-discuss-l@list.indiana.edu are going away as IU migrates to iu.edu email domain.

    • We have proposed merging these into a single list avalon-l@list.iu.edu going forward due to low traffic. We will send updates to both lists by end of December.

  • January meeting falls on MLK day and will be canceled

  • Other agenda items?

    • UMD: Omeka plug-in implemented back in 2017. Is this for Omeka S or Omeka Classic?

      • This is for Omeka Classic. This has not been touched / tested since 2018.

      • Looking at Omeka S as a potential exhibit site for them. Would like something simpler for embeds?

    • UMD: Course reserves

      • list of external groups + number of items

      • any limits to the # of external groups that can be assigned to an item. Not an upper limit that we know of.

      • can we see the # of external groups for each item? No way to see this, except to go into each item

    • NEC: cannot ingest new files. FLO is trying to export server logs to share with Chris.

Potential Future Agenda Items

  • Conversation around upgrade process for institutions that have been using Avalon for awhile (how to handle code customizations, etc.)

    • Potentially for February 17; Emily will reach out in #avalon Slack in 2025 to see if we can get some participants lined up.
