2022-05-11 Avalon User Roundtable Meeting

Attendees

  • Josh Westgard

  • Jason Coleman

Notes

  • Jason - in the middle of big migration

  • moving from sharestream, old content was here

  • migrating everything into avalon

  • ~10,000 audio and video objects

  • 1/4 of the way through

  • using the batch ingest feature

  • extract from fedora using their migration utilities

  • writing out metadata to csv, exported binaries to disk, clean CSV and reform for input into avalon

  • did run into an issue—loading a lot of small things, sometimes they get encoded so quickly and created so quickly it overwhelms fedora

  • may have had a related issue which was the postgres under fedora had a freakout and lost the connection between the two, and fedora couldn't reconnect

  • in addition to failures, saw the whole batch collapse

  • but this was restricted to a single spreadsheet...

  • everything is deployed via kubernetes, struggles with pods not connecting and things coming up in the wrong order

  • supplemental file—testing download and received an error message

  • Jason’s update

  • We're catching up with loading concert recordings from this semester and from the previous Covid years. All is going well. We're also uploading commercial DVDs for class reserves, which is been very effective and much more reliable

  • josh has token based feature in development

  • item-level - you can look at the item, and create the access token to create an access token for the avalon record

  • currently, the token overrides any access control- gives you access to unpublished items

  • At NEC, we create a guest account that's attached to a barcode for outside researchers so that we can set an expiration date in our ILS. Haven't thought of using a token feature in development
item - you can look at the item, and create the access token to create an access token for the avalon record

  • currently, the token overrides any access control- gives you access to unpublished items

  • Josh has it set for only published items, but restricted

  • maybe in July it'll roll out in production

  • another customization from josh: using core feature of moving files around when you ingest an item

  • link created on the item that allows you to download that masterfile

  • would be of interest to the community - more complete. does create complications; during this migration there are complications for replaying batches. Files could be out of sync if files have already been moved---some are there, and some are not.

  • Josh offers to demo to the group at some point.
