Agenda/Notes

  • Avalon 8.0 update

    • Includes update to Ruby 3.3 / Rails 7.2. Update Ramp to React 18.

    • Solr 6 no longer supported

    • Linked subjects (demo)

    • Fedora 6 migration process

      • UMD: are there any concerns about repository bloat? Too many OCFL objects for what we consider 1 digital object?

        • Can we provide some numbers for OCFL objects vs. repository objects

    • May be included: BrowseEverything access to Sharepoint + OneDrive for web uploads

      • currently do support s3 protocol (s3 URI)

      • dev version of Avalon uses minio to talk to s3 AWS

      • should be primarily configuration to add an s3 protocol provider

  • Use cases for unit metadata and permissions

    • Want to support departmental management of collections

    • MCO has 788 collections - permissions have to managed individually across these collections

    • Use cases:

      • provide new staff member with access to all collections for department

      • give a guest researcher access to all collections in a unit

      • establish permission inheritance without having to individually update permissions on every single item in a collection

    • UMD: do sometimes have a collection where most of the collection is publicly available, but some of it is restricted to campus users only. They don’t use logged in users only, because mostly use IP addresses for on campus access. Define the IP ranges externally and Avalon talks to IP manager.

      • IU has it on the roadmap to more efficiently support IP address ranges

    • Louisville

      • not integrated with university sign on. Create accounts for users in courses that need access to materials; materials are private.

    • Texas A&M

      • some public and some private. Private = affiliated with the university - integrated with university auth system.

  • Preventing deep pagination - https://github.com/avalonmediasystem/avalon/issues/6038

    • could this be a configuration option to turn on/off? Possibly this could be configured in Solr with Avalon documentation for how to configure

    • UMD: have workflow where they select large sets of contents using the Selected Items feature. Can support selecting up to 1,000 items. Need to make sure we’re not breaking selected items for large sets of items.

  • UMD is planning an Avalon update the end of 2024 from 7.0; have not started yet

  • In 7.8, there is support for .srt format captions. If marked as transcript, even an .srt file will show up in the transcript viewer, be searchable, etc.

Potential Future Agenda Items

  • Conversation around upgrade process for institutions that have been using Avalon for awhile (how to handle code customizations, etc.)
