Lightning Talk Signup
If you want to give a Lightning Talk at Samvera Connect 2018 (approximately 5 minutes and definitely no more than 7), please sign up below. We will accommodate as many talks as we can but it may become a matter of "first come, first served"!
All lightning talks will take place on Thursday 10/11 in Room 1715 (1st floor). Slots are given in 10 minute increments to provide a buffer for switching speakers.

9:00 - 9:10 | Steve van Tuyl | steve.vantuyl@oregonstate.edu | Hyrax Usage Survey Results | I'll present the results of the Hyrax Usage Survey - a survey that has been run every year (previously for Sufia) since 2013. These results will offer an overview of who is using Hyrax and for what type of application, and how those numbers have changed over the past few years. |
9:10 - 9:20 | Linda Sato | lsato@uoregon.edu | Spark Plug | I learned about Apache's Spark earlier this year at Code4Lib; it's a great tool for handling massive datasets, but it can also be useful for smaller projects as well. I've started to use it for metadata scraping and editing and simple analysis, and I wish I'd known about it when I was working on the Oregon Digital migration. |
9:20 - 9:30 | John Weise | jweise@umich.edu | What We Get Out of DLXS: Systematic Extraction of Institutional Knowledge from a Legacy System | We created DLXS back in the late 1990's and have since put over 290 digital collections into it. Very briefly, I will introduce the method we are working on for extracting objects for migration to our next repository. It is a multi-step process involving YAML, METS, and IIIF. It's also a huge opportunity to adjust for things we wish we had done differently at a system level. My presentation will be highlights and insights. |

9:40-9:50 | Steve van Tuyl | steve.vantuyl@oregonstate.edu | SIGAHR - where we've been and where we're going | The Samvera Interest Group Advising the Hyrax Roadmap (SIGAHR) formed in early 2018, re-energizing interest in the project, welcoming many new contributors, and helping democratize the governance of Hyrax. This Slack channel and regular meetings provide an open forum for discussion of Hyrax features, calls for co-development sprints, and enable developers, managers, and users alike to discuss the direction of Hyrax. Paired with the Hyrax Working Group and leveraging the strengths of the Samvera Community, the SIGAHR is drawing a path forward, galvanizing efforts in a diverse ecosystem. |
9:50-10:00 | Eben English | eenglish [at] bpl [dot] org | Blacklight IIIF Search | Blacklight IIIF Search is a gem that provides IIIF Content Search functionality for Blacklight-based applications. If you have items with full text (e.g. scanned books, newspapers, etc.) in your Solr index, installing this plugin provides an endpoint in your Blacklight app that will return a JSON response conforming to IIIF Content Search API. By integrating this service into your IIIF Presentation manifests, viewers that support the IIIF Search API (such as the Universal Viewer) will be able to provide functionality for searching within a resource and displaying results. |
10:00-10:10 | elr37@cornell.edu | A standalone server for authority lookups | LD4P/qa_server adds a light weight UI over the Questioning Authority (QA) gem. It is primarily focused on the linked data module in QA which provides a standard way to access authorities that provide an API returning linked data. Qa_server has a validation framework that allows for connection and accuracy scenarios to be defined in a YAML file for each authority. The UI provides basic usage documentation and lists linked data authorities providing sample QA URLs for searching for terms and fetching details for a term. It provides a means for checking whether an authority is up now by running connections tests for the selected authority. And it monitors the health of authorities by running all scenarios for all authorities nightly. | |
