2019 Steering Group Election
The Samvera Steering Group announces its 2019 annual election.
In late summer 2018, Samvera saw the unanticipated departure of Debra Hanken-Kurtz from Steering, creating a vacancy within the Steering Group. This vacancy was duly filled via a special election in the fall but, because of the short time before this annual election it was agreed the term of office would extend until summer 2022 (approximately 3.5 years). Accordingly, this election is to fill the two seats vacated by Richard Green and Mike Giarlo, who are stepping down, rather than the normal three.

Following the nomination period, these are the 2019 candidates.
Term
The elected parties will serve for a three year period until summer 2022. If a successful candidate is not already a member of the Steering Group the seat is eligible for re-election for a subsequent three year term, should the seat-holder choose to run again in 2022. Steering Group members may not serve more than two contiguous terms.
Samvera Steering provides a unique opportunity for community leadership and to provide direction to a key effort in the future of memory institutions.
Responsibilities of Steering
Current work includes:
Continuing to oversee the implementation of the Recommendations provided by the Governance Working Group
Hiring of Centralized Staff
Reviewing the Samvera Community and Steering bylaws
Working to implement a Contributions model in support of the resources requested in the Governance Recommendations
Re-assessing Governance by end of 2019
Managing elections
Those considering running for Steering should review, and have the support of their institution for, fiscal and time commitments related to the role. Fuller details of the responsibilities of Steering can be found on the Samvera Wiki.
Requirements for Nomination:
Nominees must be employed with a Samvera Partner Institution in good standing.
Nominees must provide a Statement of Purpose describing:

Reason they wish to serve on Steering
Institutions may not have more than one representative on Steering so nominations will not be accepted for individuals at institutions which will already have a Steering member for the period 2019/20. If more than one candidate is nominated from a 'new' institution, the Steering Group will contact the nominees. The nominees will then need to decide which candidate will run.

Timeline:
Nominations will be accepted between Monday 13 May and Friday 31 May
The Steering Group will contact those nominated by a third party to confirm that the nominee will run as a candidate. Candidates to submit biographies and Statements of Purpose during the week 3-7 June
June 10 - Release names of Candidates
Election - Open from June 17th - July 1st.
- Result announced July 2nd or 3rd
- New Steering members will be welcomed to the July Steering call (26th July) prior to taking up their seats on August 1st
- New Steering Members serve August 1, 2019 - July 31, 2022
