Using Avalon with a Learning Management System (LMS)

Avalon can be configured to grant access to media based on course membership in an LMS. Instructions will vary by LMS.

Using Canvas with Avalon

Adding a Canvas Course for Access to a Resource

Items which are set for restricted access can be authorized for viewing in Canvas by adding the Canvas course code to the External Group listing in an item’s access control settings.

Add the Course Code to an Item’s Access Control

  1. Get the course code for the Canvas course. The course code is a short name for the course and is displayed at the top of the Course Navigation menu.

  2. Click on the Edit button on the Avalon item page and navigate to the Access Control page.

  3. Under ‘Assign special Access’ section, enter the course code in the ‘External Group’ text area, set the date ranges for access (if desired; this is optional) and select the Add button.

  4. Go to preview page and click on “Publish” button to publish the item (if not already Published).

Items must be Published before they are accessible via LTI authentication.

Using LTI Share Links in Canvas

When adding content to a Canvas module, use the External Tool option and enter the URL for the LTI link in the URL field. The LTI Share link can be found in the Share panel on item pages.

Using External URL won’t work in Canvas for these LTI links; External Tool must be used for the authentication to be successful.
