May 4, 2015

Attendees:

  • Ben Goldman
  • Justin Simpson
  • Chela, Sally, Don, NYU
  • Wendy, Georgia Tech
  • Mike, Max and Dallas from Bentley Historical Library

Minutes:

  • SAA does not have any rooms available for the official conference location. They offered a Pop Up option but not sure this is the right format for where we are at.
  • Disk Image User Stories (Ben) –
    • Need to include what the best practices for events around images would be
    • Converting ingested DFXML to the metadata model in Hydra
    • What is the minimal amount of metadata to be useful?
    • NYU have the repository do as much work as possible – hands on work with forensics doesn't scale well. NYU not using BC, but wants to use the reporting engine as it matures.
      • File identification is a main use case for reporting – FTK good for this but FileMagick less so.
    • What do FTK reports look like? What do BC reports look like? ACTION ITEM: Share some examples.
      • What are the overlap with the technical metadata requirements being defined by the MDWG?
    • You can ingest a disk image in Archivematica – some of the BC tools have been bundled into AM. Really well documented here: https://www.archivematica.org/wiki/Digital_forensics_image_ingest
      • Not solved for AM: how do you get the image into a repository, and what metadata goes with it?
  • Hydra Metadata working group (Justin):
  • NYU announce Blacklight beta launch – https://specialcollections.library.nyu.edu/search
    • "Bridge" project – working on full scale redesign of speccoll discovery environment (both archival and bibliographic metadata) – but this is an initial start.
    • Not sure how this will intersect with ArchivesSpace at this point
    • Check back again on May 19!
    • Planning some user testing – component level discovery vs. collection level discovery
    • Trying to figure out how to be involved in Hydra community.
  • Bentley has done some interviews on archival discovery
    • better luck with the archivist interviews than the researcher interviews
    • Wondering what others think about making technical metadata discoverable to archivists somehow.
  • ACTION ITEMS:
    • Work on user stories more!
    • Add some sample forensic reports to the wiki.
