Agenda

  1. Changes to the agenda

  2. Welcome Aaron and Emily (to our July meeting!)

  3. Hyrax training workshop proposal

    1. Developer Training Workshop, 2.5 days of in person, hands on training (Tuesday-Thursday lunchtime), SoftServ offices outside San Diego, California

    2. This workshop will focus on Samvera-specific skills, with content determined in consultation with SoftServ, Samvera developers and other community members. The format will be demos and instruction provided by a developer experienced in that topic, followed by related hands-on workshop exercises. Attendees will work in pairs to solve issues and learn collaboratively, though the instructor and/or other developers will be available for questions, blockers, and review. Workshops will utilize the Hyku code base, which is built on Hyrax.

    3. Who: Six developers who want to learn to work in the Hyrax and Hyku codebase and contribute to community code. Participants should already have some experience as a Rails developer, or be an experienced developer who is in the process of learning Rails.

Tuition Cost: $3,200 per attendee. Three breakfasts and two lunches will be provided. Dinner and lodging are not included.

Samvera Sponsorship: Samvera will pay the full tuition for 4 attendees (a value of $3,200 each) in exchange for at least 120 hours of Hyrax or Hyku community maintenance work from the attendee’s institution, to be contributed in the 12 months after the workshop.

The Samvera Community wants to invest in confident community contributors who can develop and maintain the latest tools for their institution and contribute their knowledge to the wider community.

Budget: $12,800 (using part of lapsed reimbursement to the Tech Lead position, July-December 2024)

    4. When could we do this? Fall-winter? January would be appealing.

    5. Need to get additional details from SoftServ after their meeting on Monday, and confirm that they can support this plan and confirm timing.

    6. Support for moving forward with this proposal, based on information from SoftServ next week. Can offer a certificate of completion to attendees if needed.

  4. Open Repositories items of note (Heather)

    1. Infra finder launch presentation - will add Avalon and Hyrax

      1. Look at equity and inclusion and other things we don’t have; whatever formal policies we need to have for these, like APIs.

      2. Can have a small group of Board members review the entries and make sure they are accurate, and make suggestions.

    2. Lots of Samvera-related presentations. Will share a list with the full community with slides linked. Two presentations I’ll share slides when they post them:

      1. Cottage labs presentation on how they help clients compare Hyrax, Invenio, and DSpace

      2. “Community smells” paper that looked at GitHub activity may to august 2023 across 7 or so OSS communities

    3. Cottage labs expansion in EU

    4. Other discussions with potential partners and other communities about working together

  5. Need more Hyrax MWG members

    1. Accessibility issues listed on GitHub - asked Rebecca to email the community

    2. Daniel is working on:

      1. finishing getting Dassie working in GitHub actions - breakage from the move

      2. This is blocking a bunch of PRs and the double combo adapters getting merged

      3. Also want to update Nuraxes to get stable to Fedora 6 backed and auto deployed for every PR, making their user roles operate, setting up analytics for all of them

      4. Rails and Ruby upgrades need to come after this

  6. Partnerships and financial supporters

    1. Discussed potential new Partners and existing local challenges

    2. How and when should we start asking adopters more directly for non-partnership contributions?

      1. Asking for funds from general open source funders

      2. Contributions to build up a training fund, or contributions to pay a Tech Lead

  7. Other Updates

    1. https://investinopen.org/blog/announcing-the-state-of-open-infrastructure-2024/

    2. 2024 invoice payments

    3. Action: set up an exit interview for Daniel for feedback on the role. Someone on the Board should do the interview.

    4. Additional $1,742 in ITAV stipend money sent from Lyrasis this month
