Various institutions are thinking in different ways about if they could get a simpler more cost-effective app by "just writing our own app" (still with Rails in common)

  • Not using hyrax, avalon, or a "solution bundle"
  • Maybe using valkyrie, maybe not.
  • But not using ActiveFedora either way
  • Probably trying to have much lighter dependencies, especially traditional samvera dependencies.
  • Maybe thinking "What if we just wrote a Rails app, sticking closer to Rails".

What are all the different ways people are thinking? Without something like hyrax or avalon taking care of it for you, how do you handle things like permissions, workflow, derivatives, solr indexing, modelling. Are there some of these things you don't even have to handle?  How are different people/institutions thinking about it? Where are different people/institutions in this: still considering it, committed to it, embarked upon it, deployed it, still considering tried it and didn't like it?

If you're interested in talking about it, come talk about it.
