Samvera Newspapers Interest Group
Scope & Objectives
The Newspapers Interest Group is a forum for discussing ingest, management, and dissemination of digital newspaper content within Samvera- and Fedora-based systems.
Topics of interest may include:
data modeling in Samvera/Fedora
- METS-ALTO
- batch ingest
- migration from other systems
- volume, issue, page, and article-level object modeling and metadata
- IIIF compatibility
- community-supported OCR contribution/correction
content segmentation
- UX for newspaper content (discovery, display, etc.)
- compatibility with other Fedora-based systems
Potential group activities:
developing a requirements list for newspaper-content management systems
evaluating newspaper modeling from other systems/schemas
representing METS-ALTO in Fedora/Solr
- modeling newspaper content in PCDM
modeling technical, administrative, or descriptive metadata in RDF
identifying best practices for newspaper content management
- providing input on development roadmaps for newspaper-related Hydra projects
- ensuring that projects meet the newspaper-related needs of the Hydra community
Meeting Times and Communication Channels
Time/Date: Every two months, on 1st Thursday of the month. 1:00 PM (EST)
First meeting: Thursday December 1, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM (EST)
We will use the samvera-community@googlegroups.com channel for cross-community communications. The subject line of a message posted to this channel shall be preceded by "[Newspapers IG]" in square brackets.
