Agenda & Notes
Additions to the agenda?
Quick update on communicating the value of funding Hyku / Samvera
PALNI / PALCI / Nick Steinwachs have been collaborating on preparing for a design thinking session on communicating the value of Hyku to various stakeholders
including succinct messaging for institutional decision-makers
retaining Samvera partners and members
We well be finalizing the approach ASAP, and reaching out for participants + scheduling soon (within 3 weeks)
Samvera Board Special Election - last day for institutional representatives to vote
Apereo Foundation introduction, with Patrick Masson from Apereo
Board elected by individual members and community/institutional members.
Educause had a much larger focus on open source softwares and projects in early 2010s (2012 was the year of the MOOC) or so. There is less of an emphasis on that now. Apereo is trying to re-engage higher ed with the value proposition of open source.
Members submit annual report to maintain 501c3 status.
Nick S. asked how members engage with Apereo to facilitate marketing, outreach, etc. Newsletters, posts on website, directed communications-- have CRM that can be used. Community members develop communications and then work with Apereo to distribute them. Specialized campaigns. Use tool Built With to determine who is using your technology. Can help with having presentations included in conferences. Can help with grants-- review, help develop to adhere to requirements of grant.
Nick S. commented that we are very active in development, inactive in outreach. Would like to leverage Apereo’s resources to this end.
Educause-- Open Renaissance group
Jessica M. asked about talking to institutional decision-makers about the costs of open source software vs. commercial products, and Patrick said that they engage in that work frequently, including surveying higher ed leaders to see who thinks they’re using open source, then using Built With to see what they’re actually using and reporting that out-- there’s been a huge disconnect. Discussed the cost to a university choosing a commercial LMS over the years with mergers and aqcuisitions vs. Sakai by a Spanish university who adopted it at the same time. Even commercial products are often using OSS-- are they contributing back to ensure they remain viable?
Members can be as attached to Apereo as they want-- only banking/financial, or more collaborative (listed on website, etc.) There will be a meeting to discuss this as Samvera is onboarded.
