Samvera Tech Call 2025-09-10

Meeting Logistics:

Agenda (meeting notes below)

  • Hyrax @Randall Floyd

  • remote controlled vocab files - (mesh and discogs) should they live in the repo; if so should there be a cron job that runs periodically to keep them updated? Or should it require users to set up if they want to enable them? @Shana Moore

  • Questions from @Former user (Deleted)

    • How difficult/easy would it be to incorporate DOI minting? The Advancing Hyku project incorporated DataCite for this reason. How much more needs to be done? Post-Project Update, June 2022 – Advancing Hyku

    • Hyrax includes Google Scholar functionality and it seems to be working well. Can I/should I assume that we have that in Hyku? I have heard that it is not working well for PALs libraries. Do we know what that reason(s) might be and what it would take to make it work?

  • Browse-everything @Chris Colvard

    • Anyone using dropbox adapter?

    • Avalon planning on merging fork back upstream. Who would be available to test?

Notes

  1. Flexible metadata update (Randall)

    1. All working and needs to get on the nurax servers for more testing

    2. Trying to add a feature spec for flexible functions, but proving tricky. Consensus on deferring addition of this spec?

      1. (Rob) Factors: Do a controller level spec instead? Still more PRs related to this coming, eg generators.

    3. Minor release? (General thumbs up given.)

  2. Remote authority (Shana)

    1. Should this be integrated? Rob: This should be kept separate from flexible metadata because they can be independent

    2. If a file for a remote authority should be actually committed, where does a remote authority live? knapsack, hyku, or hyrax?

    3. Mark: long ago, caching layer for remote auths, to overcome that the remote can change past what's committed

    4. It seems like people would want the same ones, but committing them does need some mechanism for keeping them updated in a live system.

    5. But initially get it working/refined in Hyku

  3. Christine: DOI minting and Google Scholar

    1. How much work to get it working hyku/hyrax?

    2. Rob: Hard to get developers to work on cases like this when the initial effort of getting head back around something is as big as the work itself

    3. For British Library, substantial work was redone past the current gem, would have to get that back into gem for hyrax/hyku
Does Hyrax have it? No, an optional gem

    4. Google Scholar:

      1. PALS implementation, not working well. Why not working in Hyku?

      2. Mark: worked with Emory; unclear what the google support is

      3. Hyrax has the metadata required for it; site to go to submit site but then no further way to interact for managing/monitoring

      4. Rob: Some scrapers were imitating the Google scholar bot and was a problem, so could be getting blocked by Cloudflare

      5. Mark/DCE: Schoolie gem is the one that has the sitemap, but would need a lift to get that into Hyrax

      6. Emory: use schoolie in Hyrax 5 to provide the sitemap, not a heavy lift, still a question of whether not google is using it effectively

  4. Chris Browse Everything

    1. Is anyone using dropbox adapter; how concerned if support for dropbox was dropped

    2. Avalon working on fork and would like to get changes back in, would like some people to help

    3. Emory: seems to be broken for a while, or is obsolete at best

    4. Rob: known to be broken in Notch8 projects, so removing it is just removing broken adapter

    5. Could be bulkrax implication; definitely uses it

    6. Consensus on call would be great to have better version of B-E to bring back in from Avalon

    7. Chris will coordinate bringing that out of their fork
