AI Working Group Charter - Draft

AI Working Group Charter - Draft

Scope

The AI Working Group will focus on:

In Scope:

  • AI integration opportunities within Samvera stack (Hyrax, Hyku, Valkyrie)

  • AI-enhanced repository services (metadata generation, search, discovery, content analysis)

  • Developer tooling and infrastructure for AI implementation

  • Market analysis of AI adoption in digital repository space

  • Technical feasibility assessment of AI features for repository workflows

  • Community education on AI capabilities and implementation strategies

Out of Scope:

  • General AI research unrelated to repository systems

  • Implementation of production systems (prototypes and POCs only)

  • Direct competition analysis of non-repository platforms

  • AI governance policies for individual institutions

Objectives

  1. Value Identification: Identify and prioritize AI integration opportunities that deliver measurable value to Samvera Community members, with emphasis on features that increase adoption and retention of Hyku/Hyrax installations.

  2. Intelligence Distribution: Maintain current awareness of AI developments relevant to digital repositories and disseminate actionable intelligence to community leadership, particularly consortia operators and institutional decision-makers.

  3. Competitive Positioning: Assess AI capabilities required to maintain Samvera's market relevance against commercial repository solutions and emerging AI-native platforms.

  4. Market Outreach and Communication: Generate engaging content to share with the market related to AI use in archives and digital repositories, and how it relates to the Samvera Foundation / Hyku / Hyrax upcoming functionality.

  5. Technical Validation: Develop working prototypes demonstrating feasible AI integrations, with documented implementation pathways for community adoption.

  6. Standards Development: Establish community guidelines for AI feature implementation, data handling, and integration patterns within the Samvera ecosystem.
