Hyku 7 Upgrade Community Fundraising 2025
Why Crowdfund?
The Hyku Community is fundraising to fast-track critical upgrade work required for platform performance, security, and quality. The goal of this fundraising is to ensure this work is completed by the end of summer 2025.
The outcome: Release Hyku 7 by the End of Summer 2025
Notch8 has secured Rob Kaufman to lead this essential upgrade work, which includes:
Integrating the latest Hyrax 5.1 into Hyku
Upgrading Ruby and Rails with full dependency resolution
Comprehensive testing and spec development
Rob has the experience to complete this work quickly so that it is complete in time for community development work this fall.
Why this work matters
For both the Hyku and Hyrax communities to enjoy the “cross-pollination” of features and benefits of both, they both need to be on the same version of Rails, and share the same core Hyrax engine version.
This work sets up both platforms for improved quality with fewer bugs.
This work is a required step to address performance issues.
Less divergence (and more convergence) of both projects means higher quality of releases through streamlined testing and a lower maintenance burden.
Timeline & Budget
Estimated completion: 2 months
Total budget: $20,000
Target release: August 2025
If 10 institutions can each pledge $2,000 toward this effort we will reach our goal. Some institutions may be able to contribute more if needed to help institutions who can’t reach the full contribution goal, so contribution pledges of any amount are welcome.
Pledged Contributions
Private Academic Library Network of Indiana (PALNI) - $2,000
West Virginia University Libraries - $2,000
Covenant Theological Seminary - $500
By distributing the cost across our community, we can move forward quickly without burdening any single institution. Your contribution, regardless of size, helps maintain the collaborative spirit that makes Hyku special.
If we're not able to reach the target budget, this work will still need to be completed, but it will happen more slowly and without the momentum of a dedicated sprint.
