Virtual Connect reflections
Reminder: Documentation Sprint next week, Development Sprint week after - Developer and Documentation sprints
Heather is pleased that almost 20 people signed up for Documentation sprint. The Documentation Group has laid solid groundwork, and Heather expects good outcomes.
Virtual Connect – no Zoom problems! Seemed to lead to questions and discussions. Karen said the level of engagement was great and made Samvera feel like a healthy community. We have a consistent number of people coming to Virtual Connect and it’s great to see that. Julie Hardesty and the Hyku folks doing more participatory sessions was a success. Heather is cutting the videos for Day One and will have those out tomorrow. By Monday, she’ll have Day Two ready. She’ll let everyone know.
Hyku/Hyrax Community Development Training Camp overview
Have room for 14; about 6 have been confirmed
Signups – let Heather know if that seems easy enough. There is a commitment after the training. Kirsten thought it would be good to add that we can help people with that commitment. David thought there could be a more explicit “elevator pitch” at the beginning of the signup to let people know what they can expect to come out of the training with. Add a “why attend” to website/signup. Given (presumed) constrained travel budgets for the upcoming year, having this language might also help folks craft their travel request justifications and pointing out the time that it commits to future maintenance sprints.
It’s going to cost around 20K, and we’ll have the updated curriculum afterwards
Heather has a letter ready for non-partner implementers inviting them to attend and saying it is a benefit of partnership.
Roadmap Alignment Group draft cross-platform roadmap - overview and request for feedback.
Draft roadmap in spreadsheet format with 6 areas and related initiatives
Really focused on the things we want to have completed or nearly completed by the end of 2025. This includes some initiatives that are in progress, such as the COAR integration funded by Cottage Labs
Tough to forecast how long each initiative will take.
Roadmap group reviewing this every time they meet.
Nicholas Homenda noted that the scope of each milestone is variable. Tried not to make the language specific to GitHub issues.
Accessibility using SiteImprove to assess each page; Accessibility Group working on VPAT. Having the application WCAG compliant is one thing; it’s another to have the capacity to add such things as alt text to make content compliant – it will take a longer on-ramp for the content side. AV support in Hyrax could be better considering WCAG 2.1AA, particularly for those institutions who can’t stand up an Avalon repository.
Are there pieces in Avalon that could be pulled into Hyrax? There has been some work in the Avalon community (e.g., plug-ins for Hyrax). This might be a future direction to consider/investigate what it would take.
This draft will go to the interest groups for further feedback. It will be good to have Hyku and Hyrax interest group input on prioritization.
GitHub Boards can refer to the roadmap.
Central roadmap can help with identifying projects for fundraising
Heather: Does this format work for the roadmap? (overall, yes)
Would there be a way for someone reviewing this roadmap to help them learn more (without making upkeep of the roadmap more onerous)? Wiki page home for this will have the objectives and potentially could have a short narrative about each platform linking to release notes, GitHub, what’s being working on and why.
Could there be a quarterly cross-platform check-in?
Other Updates:
Sign up to present or facilitate a topic (5 - 30 minutes) at a 2025 Partner call - see list of ideas on the page
Update on a Slack issue affecting our workspace, now resolved
Slack got the wires crossed at some point – people who didn’t mean to join our Slack were added. Heather turned off the feature where people were added automatically if they have a certain email address.
Samvera Europe meeting - June 6th in Leeds, UK after IIIF Conference - RSVP
Chris Awre organized this. Looking for interest and input. Want to showcase work that Samvera has done around IIIF. If you are going to be at the conference, let Chris know.
Samvera Connect 2025 Mexico City - call for proposals this month
Registration should be around $200. Colmex has good AV options, so some sessions may be hybrid
Hyku 7 dependancies upgrade funding drive kicking off soon
Anything for the Samvera Board? (Standing item)
Date of next call: Jun 12, 2025 Notetaker for next call: @Nicholas Mark Homenda
