1.2.2 Accessibility Compliance

Regarding accessibility and Title II compliance:

Where Hyku stands today (generally a good place, following accessibility best practices):

• The platform offers semantic HTML, ARIA support, keyboard navigation, and screen reader compatibility out of the box.

• Full-text PDF search and metadata-driven displays also aid in accessible content discovery.

• User-uploaded content (e.g., PDFs, images, videos) requires creators to meet accessibility standards themselves, though Hyku’s Universal Viewer offers a more accessible display experience for multimedia.

What’s happening now:

• In February 2025, the Samvera/Hyku community formed a new Accessibility Working Group.

• This group is auditing the platform against WCAG 2.2 and the Title II (ADA) updates, identifying gaps, and planning remediations.

Looking ahead:

• The working group expects to publish a public roadmap and audit summary by Summer 2025.

• Accessibility-focused patches and improvements will begin landing in Hyku releases starting in late Q3 and Q4 2025.

We view accessibility as a shared priority and are committed to evolving Hyku in lockstep with the highest level of WCAG, as well as international standards. The Samvera Foundation and Community prioritize the preservation and sharing of knowledge and information to all differently-abled humans.
