Agenda/Notes
Introductions
Update on next release
Blacklight 8 and Rails 8 upgrade mostly complete
Hopefully Bootstrap 5 + Wowza upgrade

New public facet: Rights Statement

Improve keyboard / screenreader navigation of Ramp components (auto-advance, structure, transcript)
search box retains previously entered search terms
pull any existing caption files from mp4 container upon ingest
Accessibility compliance needs and planning - updates
Avalon can support upload of transcripts and captions. User-facing pages have been or will be reviewed for WCAG 2.1 AA compliance (timelines could be an issue)
NEW: Avalon and Ramp will be investigating how to support audio description when available for media items
IU plans a (presumably optional per site configuration) workflow in Avalon that does not allow post April 2026 materials to be published if they do not have a caption or transcript.
NEW: Hope to build an integration based on Active Encode to allow collection managers to request a machine-generated caption/transcript for a post April 2026 item.
Other needs for institutions to support WCAG 2.1 by April 2026
Emily’s last day at IU will be July 23. Moving to Director, Design & Discovery at the University of Michigan Library.
Other agenda items?
If folks are stuck on 7.x (can’t move to Fedora 6 yet), can they get to the 8.x releases with accessibility improvements?
both UMD and Texas A&M are interested in this; will bring up on Slack whether it is possible to run 8.x against Fedora 4 and possibly test this
UMD would like some of the 8.1 enhancements in their 7.8 instance since they can’t move to Fedora 6 for awhile yet.
esp. Rights Management and retaining search terms in search box
May consider cherrypicking this
LTI 1.1 will be end of life soon
LTI 1.3 was investigated; at IU the Canvas folks said they do support 1.3, but there was no urgency to upgrade from 1.1 in the meantime as support continued.
Initially, UMD just wants course lists of material that
In the future, UMD would like to actually move plugin work with Atlas into Avalon, but that would require LTI 1.3. Allow Ares to communicate directly with Avalon so students can access any items in Avalon from their LMS.
Ares presents course reserve lists in Canvas. Ares uses the LTI integration to allow the user to click on an AV item directly in the course reserve lists in Canvas and go directly through to Avalon.
Ingesting caption files
Is there a way to bulk ingest captions into Avalon prior to 7.8 release? In what release did Avalon begin supporting caption files in multiple languages?
We think that prior to 7.8, captions and supplemental files could be ingested as part of batch ingest, but not sure if they could be added via batch ingest to existing records.
Potential Future Agenda Items
LTI integration and course reserve workflows - demo of UMD for course reserves
Use of Avalon 8.x with Fedora 6?
